EXCLUSIVE PICS: Saif-Kareena's big fat Bollywood sangeet

The much-anticipated wedding of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor started with an intimate sangeet ceremony for family and close friends on Sunday evening at Saif’s new duplex apartment in Bandra. The bridal couple arrived at about 9 pm, followed almost immediately by their guests.

Kareena looked gorgeous in an orange and goldlehenga saree designed by Manish Malhotra, with emeralds as jewellery, and Saif went the nawabway with a white Nehru jacket worn over a kurta.

The first guests to arrive were Saif’s sister Soha Ali Khan with her beau Kunal Khemmu, followed by Amrita Arora and husband Shakeel Ladakh. Neetu Singh and Reema Jain came in together. Armaan Jain who, incidentally is being launched as an actor by Saif’s Illuminati Productions, arrived later. Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena’s other cousin, couldn’t make it to the party. Saif’s daughter Sara looked beautiful in an Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla outfit.

Judging by the vans parked near the building, the party was catered by the restaurant Joss, which specialises in European and Asian cuisines. Guests danced to songs like Disco Deewane, Halkat Jawani, Radha and Disco Dancer which were played on a loop.

Indoors, performances were put up by Karan Johar, Malaika Arora, Tusshar Kapoor and other close friends of Kareena and Saif, but after a while, guests drifted upstairs to the beautifully decorated terrace.

Meanwhile, out on the street, the assembled media tried their hardest to catch any news they could possibly get from the party, which led to such chaos that equipment was broken and scuffles broke out between media persons and curious onlookers. The police had to be called at 12.30 am, not only to control the chaos on the streets, but also to warn Saif and Kareena that playing loud music is not permitted in Mumbai after 10 pm. However, though the music was put off at 12.45 am, it returned louder than before at 1.15 am, and continued almost till dawn.

Manisha is the good ghost, I’m the bad one, says Ramgopal Varma

Manisha is the good ghost, I'm the bad one, says Ramgopal Varma in a chat with TOI along with his Bhoot Returns actress

All set to scare the audience?

Ramgopal: I'm also set to be scared by the audiences!

Manisha: (laughs) We are looking forward to the release and audience reaction. So there's anxiety...

R: Not at all. I'm a completely fearless person because I have ghostly intuitions about myself and ghosts can't get scared. Manisha is spiritual. She is Casper, I am Spooky!

M: I am a little nervous about it because it's my first film release after a couple of years.

Do you watch horror films?

M: I get really scared, so I stopped watching them. But thanks to him at 12 at night the other day I watched this film.

R: I watch a lot of them. I keep looking back just in case the film characters are behind!

This is an important film for both of you. What prompted each of you to work with the other?

R: I have always been a fan of Manisha. After she came back, I approached her because I thought she was perfect for the role. You will have to ask her why she agreed to work with me!

M: We stayed in touch even after Company. When he got in touch with me for this, I agreed because I liked the role.

How would you define your rapport?

R: It's distant closeness.

M: If it can be defined!

Are there any similarities between the two of you?

R: No way. Manisha is kind, charitable, friendly. The opposite of that is what I am... selfish, conceited and somebody who doesn't care a damn.

M: I don't perceive Ramu like that all.

R: See, she is proving my point.

M: We are different. Let's leave it to that.

What's the best part about Bhoot Returns?

R: I would say the sound and the plot of a mother being scared for her daughter... this cute little girl and what kind of drama unfolds.

M: The 3D and the music. The way he has used the silence as well as the sound is brilliant.

Do you consider horror a niche genre?

R: Any genre is a niche one, for that matter. Horror is an experience where people want to feel the thrill of it.

M: Horror has a huge audience, it's a major part of cinema.

Bhoot Returns, produced by Alumbra Entertainment and presented by Eros International, releases today.

Rani Mukerji : Why tag a film as heroine-oriented?

Mukerji on Aiyyaa and doing movies that appeal to her
Apart from it being the story of a middle class girl, Aiyyaa is also about the sexual awakening of a woman?

Not really. It's a simple story — about this girl from a traditional middle class family — that every girl can relate to. She is leading a life in tune with what her parents want, but in her head and in her fantasy space, she is something else. She romanticises life, doing a lavani, belly dancing, doing a Madhuri or a Juhi. About the sexual awakening, director Sachin Kundalkar's basic observation was that in Hindi films it's always a woman who is the object of desire. Why isn't a man an object of desire? In society today it is so, then why not in films? In Aiyyaa, Meenaxi desires a man in every way that we women would desire men.

In real life, have you always been a dreamer and a romantic?

Yes, but not as much as Meenaxi does! We are all dreamers, we all hope. As a child, I remember I always wanted to make my parents happy and give them everything in their lives. About being a romantic, yes I am. Love is a great emotion, but I believe it's not just about romance, it could be love for nature, people, for relationships.

Many heroine-oriented films have come together in recent times...

It's not a sudden trend with Nargisji doing Mother India and Nutanji doing Bandini and Sujata. In their time, they were never called heroine-centric or women-oriented films. Even today, one should not tag them, they are just good or bad films. We didn't do this in the past, I don't know why we are slotting them now. In romantic films, women have always been the protagonists.

Where do you see yourself in this rat race?

For more than a decade I have been taking decisions and choosing films that I'd like to do. For me things have not changed. Today, too, when a script comes to me, I have the option to either do it or not. This rat race term has come about because at a particular time there is a rat race between just those few people.

In reality, what is important is that throughout your career, you have to make yourself interesting enough for people to be waiting to see your films. In my case, people are longing to see what I come out wth next. That's my success.

You've danced in this film like never before?

People have focussed so much on my performances that my dancing took a backseat. I am a classical dancer and in this film, I have done all forms. Here, there was an opportunity to go all out. Vaibhavi, as a choreographer, got an opportunity to give a different pallate to all the songs. And our combination worked. Also, it was always my desire to learn belly dancing and I did that.

With Kareena's marriage now, everyone's curious to know about your plans...

Marriage happens, it can't be planned. When it has to happen, it will happen. Normally, what we always believe is that however prepared you are, if it's not meant to happen, it won't. And however much we have not planned, it will still happen if it's destined. In my case, there are no plans right now. But whenever it is, it will be one of the happiest moments and I will pretty much enjoy that phase as I am enjoying this phase of my life.

Aiyyaa, produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures releases today.

paperboy and jack reacher
This festive season, be ready for some high voltage entertainment. You’ll be treated to three Hollywood crime thrillers starring A-listers like Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. We tell you why you should keep your eyes open for The Paperboy, Killing Them Softly and Jack Reacher.

Nicole Kidman looks trashy sexy in this dark film by Lee Daniel, based on the novel 'Paperboy'. There are more reasons why you should watch the film than Nicole’s sexy avatar though. Set in 1995, Paperboy is about a reporter coming back to investigate a murder. From the trailer, the movie promises drama, action and of course a bit of tantalising by sexy Nicole as Charlotte Bless.

Watch the Paperboy trailer here.

Tom Cruise starrer Jack Reacher is based on a fictional character created by British author Jim Grant. This one has Cruise playing a military officer who chases suspects behind a shootout in a city that kills five people. Should be an interesting watch we think!

Check out the Jack Reacher trailer here.

killing them softly

The third film to watch out this season is Brad Pitt starrer Killing Them Softly. Based on a 1974 novel by George V Higgins, Pitt plays a professional enforcer, who investigates a robbery that takes place during a poker game.

Asha Bhosle’s daughter Varsha commits suicide

Mumbai: Legendary singer Asha Bhosle’s daughter Varsha who was suffering from depression, committed suicide on Monday.
She shot herself in the head, police said. The incident occurred around 12.30 p.m.

A singer and columnist, Varsha, 56, shot herself in the temple with a pistol of Belgian make at her residence in 'Prabhu Kunj' apartments on posh Peddar Road in South Mumbai.

She has not left behind any suicide note, Additional Commissioner of Police (South) Krishna Prakash said, adding police are trying to find out in whose name the pistol was registered.

She was alone in the house at the time of the incident, police said.

Prakash said Varsha's maid servant Deepali Mane knocked on the door of Bhosle's house around 10 am but no one answered.

Worried, she contacted Asha Bhosle's driver who told her that Varsha might be sleeping. After some time the maid went to the flat again but nobody opened the door.

The driver then entered the flat through Asha's elder sister Lata Mangeshkar's adjacent flat and found Varsha lying in a pool of blood on a sofa. Police were called in and Varsha was taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead, the officer said.

Varsha had married a sports writer and public relations professional but the couple divorced in 1998, sources close to the family said.

Prakash said police had learnt that Varsha wanted to start an orphanage with famous fashion photographer Gautam Rajadakshya, who passed away last year.

Varsha, who was said to be very close to Rajadhyaksha, was distraught after his death and was under medication for depression.

Asha Bhosle, who is away in Singapore, has cut shot her stay and taken a flight back, sources close to the family said.

Meanwhile, the body has been taken to J J Hospital for post mortem, police said.

Varsha had attempted suicide in September 2008 by consuming a dangerously high dose of sleeping pills.

The Bhosle family had kept mum on the reason behind the suicide attempt then. But it is being believed that a private problem had been troubling Varsha for long.

'Bigg Boss' sixth season comes up in new avatar

The sixth season of reality show 'Bigg Boss' is going to be different from the previous years with the housemates having the company of a parrot and a fish in the house designed with a new look.

Shifted to Pune's hill town Lonavala from last year's Karjat, the 'Bigg Boss' house will have statues of the 'three wise monkeys' by the poolside, apart from a panic room this year.

The show with a tag line 'Alag Che' (different) will go on air from today on Colors. It will have celebrity contestants staying in a house for about three months, cut off from the outside world, with the 'Bigg Boss' keeping a watch on them.

Renowned national award winning art director Sabu Cyril has designed the 15,000 sq ft house. "I have not seen this show regularly. I have been doing films and I took this show as a challenge. I wanted to give a modern yet futuristic touch to the house... I am content with the way the house has been set up," Cyril said.

This season there will be over 70 cameras following every move of the contestants round-the-clock.

The show will see Salman Khan as the host for the third time. Last year the superstar hosted the show along with fellow actor Sanjay Dutt.

Any house mate who violates Bigg Boss's rules will be reprimanded in the panic room.

There are likely to be 17 people locked in the house this season.
The names that are doing the rounds include former cricketer and BJP MP Navjot Singh Siddu; Sampat Lal, the former head of the Gulabi dacoit gang; controversial cartoonist Aseem Trivedi; popular television actress Urvashi Dholakia; actors Rajiv Paul and Delnaz Irani, comic actor Vrajesh Hirjee; Bhojpuri actor Dinesh Lal Yadav; popular TV actresses Aashka Goradia and Sayantani Ghosh.

Besides, names of model-cum-actor Karisma Kotak, best remembered for her role in the remake of Telugu version of 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai'; model and actor Sana Khan; model Niketan Madhok and celebrity hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani are also doing rounds.

In addition, gossip mills are abuzz that there will be three commoners in the show.

BIGG BOSS 6: Salman Khan becomes highest paid actor on tube

No one can deny his star power on the big screen. But even as Salman Khan returns for the third consecutive season of Bigg Boss today, we hear that his pay packet for the small screen too has gone up significantly.

After taking home Rs. 2.8 - Rs. 3 crore per episode last year, the actor will pocket a cool Rs. 3.8 to Rs. 4 crore per episode this time around. The earlier season had seen Sanjay Dutt play co-host as Salman was either busy shooting for Ek Tha Tiger or coping with his illness. This time, however, the star will be present from the start to finish and is being paid big bucks for this commitment.

Incidentally, this also makes Salman the highest-paid Bollywood actor on the tube, followed by Aamir Khan (Satyamev Jayate,
Rs. 3 crore per episode), Shah Rukh Khan (Total Wipeout: Zor Ka Jhatka,Rs. 2 crore per episode), Hrithik Roshan (Just Dance, Rs. 2 crore per episode), and Akshay Kumar (Khatron Ke Khiladi season four, Rs. 1.5 crore per episode). Amitabh Bachchan, though, is in a different league altogether. He has signed a whopping deal of Rs. 100 crore for three seasons of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Bigg Boss is close to Salman. His family loves it and he is aware of its popularity. A source close to the show says, “Salman relates to Bigg Boss because of the concept and its appeal. He appreciates the fact that the show allows people who are usually misunderstood to prove themselves in the house. The public too loves watching his real side and he gets a chance to meet people from all walks of life. The fact that he insisted that the show become family-oriented and air at 9 pm, shows his involvement and interest in it.”

Inside the Bigg Boss House
With season six of the Colors reality show, Bigg Boss, beginning tonight, I, along with 14 other journalists, got an opportunity to get a feel of the house way before the contestants.

I was let into the house with a mike and a blindfold. Along with a pool, a gymnasium, an aquarium, and surprisingly, a hand pump, the spacious garden also includes the statues of the three monkeys depicting ‘Sal-mannerisms’ (See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil). With around 70 cameras in the house, hiding from the voyeuristic eye is almost impossible.

Comprising over 15,000 sq feet, the house is the largest so far, and designed by Bollywood set designer Sabu Cyril, in vibrant colours — white, yellow, orange and green. It comprises a living area, two bedrooms — one arranged in the style of flower petals and the other of double and single beds and the captain’s room with an attached bathroom. And the famous confession room now has a futuristic look with a metallic finish.

With vaastu and feng-shui elements introduced in the house to maintain peace and harmony, the makers are serious about making the show apt for family audiences.

After the 14 journalists arrived, the booming voice, saying, “Bigg Boss chahte hain” (Bigg Boss wants) gave us our first task — to eat 10 bananas in one go. We sportingly took up the task and enjoyed it to the core. When it was time for refreshments, Bigg Boss gave us a good meal, saving us the trouble of preparing a meal for ourselves.

Time flew and just when we were about to call it a day, Bigg Boss gave us another task — to prepare a dessert. Two teams prepared fruit custard, with my team ultimately winning the task. A long day of fun and gossip finally came to an end. Next morning, we were woken up by the loud Bigg Boss title song, indicating that soon it was time to leave the house.

‘English Vinglish’ review: Sridevi, what a comeback!

‘English Vinglish’ review: Sridevi, what a comeback!

After a sabbatical of 15 years, Sridevi has returned to do a meaty role in ‘English Vinglish’ and post watching the film, I have just one word for the actress - FLAWLESS!

Gauri Shinde has donned the director’s hat to tell the story of Sashi (Sridevi), a middle-aged Maharashtrian housewife who earns her own money by making sumptuous ladoos (which happens to be her passion too) and selling them to the connoisseurs. A lot of women would identify with Sashi since she is one of those dedicated yet taken-for-granted homemakers who are ridiculed for their poor linguistic skills by their English speaking family. In the movie, Sashi finds herself being an object of constant potshots by her husband(Adil Hussain), who has little respect for her real talent and her 7th grade daughter who feels ashamed to even introduce her mother to her school folks.

So when an underestimated and belittled Sashi flies off to New York to lend a helping hand at her niece’s wedding, she smartly grabs the opportunity to enroll herself into English speaking classes that promise to teach the language within a period of flat four weeks. In no time, Sashi becomes the most committed student in her class, starts watching English films at night and doing her homework religiously- all to polish her English reading and writing skills and more importantly to earn respect that she duly deserves from her family. In the midst of her literary pursuit, she also finds her classmate cum friend – a Frenchman (an irresistible Mehdi Nebbou) getting attracted to her plain simple personality. Yet, despite several barriers that come her way, Sashi manages to achieve her goal (that includes ordering her meal at the café with super confidence) which could be an inspiration to many aspiring English learners.

Going beyond the ‘ordinary’ story of ‘English Vinglish’, it is a movie that teaches a lot of life lessons. First, it gives a peek into the feelings of those who are not good at reading and writing the language and find themselves becoming a subject of disdain and jibe whether at home or in public. Second, it is a crash course on mannerisms for all those ‘refined’ husbands and children out there who believe that the woman of the house is only worth taking nonsense; notwithstanding the fact that she goes out of her way to please them, without a complaint. Third, like I said before, the film is all about dedication towards one’s aims and a relentless pursuit towards your dream, come what may.

Sridevi as the de-glam Sashi looks completely stunning and gets very much into the skin of her character in the film. The way she emotes when she is looked down upon for her poor angrezi is worthy of a good round of applause. It is safe to say that after ‘Sadma’, Chaalbaaz’ and ‘Chandni’, she will always be remembered for her versatile act in ‘English Vinglish’. Clearly, this movie is one of her best works till date.

Moving on to film’s direction, kudos to Gauri Shinde for narrating a story which leaves such an impact on the viewers. Also, a special thanks to her (she has also written the story) for making a film on such a unique storyline which apparently has a close connection to the life of Shinde’s mother and perhaps, many other Indian women out there.

Amit Trivedi has given cool and foot tapping music to the film while designer Sabyasachi has done his job very well in dressing up Sridevi in colorful khadi sarees that suit her age and role.

Overall, ‘English Vinglish’ is a complete family entertainer and worth every penny! Yes, Sridevi is back!

Rating: 4 cheers to Sridevi, Gauri Shinde and the complete cast for their perfect job!

Mani Ratnam, Aishwarya not teaming up!

There are reports doing the rounds that director Mani Ratnam is roping in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for an adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's famous 1938 novel Rebecca.

However, these reports have been denied by sources close to Mani Ratnam. When TOI contacted Mani's wife, Suhasini, she denied the report that Ash and Mani will be working together next. Asked if the director had roped in Ash for Rebecca, she said, "No, it's wrong."

Suhasini went on to add, "Mani is currently focussed on Kadal, which still has seven days of shoot left. He will decide on his next only after this film releases. It will take him eight more months after that to write his next script. So, any news about his future project that comes up in this time period is false."

When TOI spoke to Mani Ratnam's spokesperson, he also said, "Mani sir is currently busy with the post-production work of Kadal. He's yet to decide on his next. The stories doing the rounds about his next film with Ash are just rumours."

Even though the industry is waiting for Ash to announce her project post pregnancy, guess we will just have to wait and watch.

I don’t have a clue about my marriage: John Abraham

Actor Bipasha Basu, John Abraham's ex-girlfriend has been very vocal about her personal status — be it her relationship with John, how it failed, how she felt cheated or the kind of men she desires.

However, John strictly maintains the "no personal questions" status when quizzed about Bipasha. John and Tusshar Kapoor were shooting in Nira, a town located near Satara district, for a sequence of their upcoming film,Shootout at Wadala. TOI caught up with the actor to know more about his marriage plans, films and production venture.
Quiz him about his much talked about marriage with investment banker Priya Runchal and he says, "It has to happen when it will. I have no clue. But as of now I am enjoying my time with my parents." On further prodding him about being secretly married in January this year, during his visit to New York, he adds, "Oh, is it! What rubbish! I don't know about it. If I get married, it should be, well, a dream marriage."

Of late, John has been a part of many multi-starrer flicks including Desi Boyz and Housefull 2. Was it a conscious decision to stay away from lead roles? "Well, I am a people's person. I like to spend time with everyone and I prefer working with a lot of people. Perhaps that is a reason enough for me to be a part of multi-starrer films. I have done two films with Akshay. He issuperb and like a big bro to me," explains John.

John has recently ventured into production with Vicky Donor, which was one of the blockbusters this year. "I feel fortunate to have opened a production house. I can understand the pulse of the youth and this will show in my next production ventures as well," says John. Ayushmann Khurrana was a part of the film. Wasn't it a risk for him to sign newcomers for such films? "I am a risk taker. And will remain so all my life. Look at the kind of films I did. Though they did not work well at the BO, I was sure about the films. Water, Jism and Force — my belief reflects in what I do. And now I want to do something for the youth of the country," he explains.

John has recently signed director Imtiaz Ali's brother, Sajid for Banana. The film is set in Jamshedpur and mostly shot in the school which Imtiaz and Sajid attended. "Apart from Banana, there is Jaffna with Shoojit Sircar. I am also working on the script of Delhi Shelli, Luv Shuv and a film, tentatively titled I Me Aur Main."

Looks like this hunk has no time to think of anything beyond work.

What is that ‘something’ about Sridevi…?

While we all agree there’s ‘something’ about Sri, when asked what that something really is, we are totally thrown! We could say it’s nostalgia – for a top actress who waltzed away from dizzying movie glory , fifteen long years ago. That fact alone is enough to get her fans into a frenzy of anticipation. But that’s not the whole answer, is it? Many an actress has waltzed away, waltzed back and regretted the decision later. As they say in this cruel business, once off the silver screen, it’s off from people’s hearts and minds. Largely true. Fantasy feeds on visual reminders. In an era in which an alarmingly young Alia Bhatt is being projected as the next big thing, and established stars hitting 30 are seen as over-the hill has- beens, it is a monumental challenge for Sridevi (49), a mother of two teenage daughters, to woo a blasé, hardened, seasoned audience once again. Will English-vinglish do the trick for the glorious Sri?

I’d say, whether or not the movie sets the box office on fire, Sridevi devotees ( countless, across the world) will applaud, whistle and shout during the screenings. I know one such diehard fan who lives in Hong Kong. Rama has worshipped Sri from the time he was a little boy ( Rama is just 30 himself). His home is a shrine dedicated to Sri . It has been his sole and most fervent dream to be in Sri’s divine presence and breathe the same air as his Goddess. Well, it happened recently when Sri was in Hong Kong to promote her film. I am not sure Rama has started breathing normally yet! To evoke this powerful a response, an actor needs more than just physical beauty. Sri, with her statuesque body and those eyes like ‘dark pools’ ( Rama’s description!) that invite you to drown in them, is indeed a gorgeous lady. But there are equally gorgeous and far younger stars around. While most of Sri’s contemporaries have either opted for Reality TV ( Madhuri Dixit) or disappeared into oblivion, by picking an unconventional, quirky subject, Sri has displayed rare acumen. For a girl , who at her peak, was known for her standard ‘Ask Mummy’ response to any and every question, today’s Sri has responded to interviewers with poise, grace and intelligence. More importantly, she has picked a deglamorised role that relies far more on her histrionics than on those ample curves. That’s a pretty brave decision! Going by just the teasers and previews, Sri’s plain jane character comes into her own after facing enormous hurdles on account of her lack of English language skills in a foreign land ( Canada). Determined to overcome hurdles and prejudice, the awkward, embarrassed lady decides to enroll in a language school. What happens after she acquires those hard to master skills, is the basic premise of Gouri Shinde’s movie. Thousands of Indians across the world will easily identify with Sri’s predicament. That in itself is a huge start. But eventually, the film’s commercial and critical success will rest on the audience reponse to Sri herself. One generation of movie goers doesn’t really know who Sridevi is . The older fans may expect another wet blue saree dream sequence, complete with orgasmic groans and close ups of Sri’s heaving bosom. Despite these distorted hopes, my feeling is that Sri will score big time. The reason is simple : Sridevi endears herself to her audience. She has the capacity to connect directly and emotionally to her fans. On screen, Sri is electrifying, no matter whom she’s playing. Off screen, she’s another human being – almost boringly reticent. The other thing about her comeback, is that she doesn’t sound desperate about it. Unlike most of her rivals. She, more than any of them, appears relaxed and chilled out about her big decision to taste stardom all over again. With an attitude like that, Sri has nothing to lose!
