Deepika Padukone lands Happy New Year because Katrina Kaif couldn't do it

It is now clear that Shah Rukh Khan’s next production Happy New Year will feature Deepika Padukone. The news did not please those who were waiting to see the SRK-Katrina Kaif jodi re-unite after Jab Tak Hai Jaan. While Katrina Kaif was approached to do this film, she recently signed two new films — Kabir Khan’s for producer Sajid Nadiadwala with Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Kapoor’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations — and so has no room this year for any other project.

Says a friend of Katrina, “She would have loved to do Farah’s film. Farah initially wanted to sign a completely new girl for Happy New Year, but when she couldn’t find the right girl to play her leading lady, she zeroed in on Kat. The actress and Farah are very fond of each other ever since they worked together in Tees Maar Khan. The film’s failure did not affect their mutual fondness. To be in Farah’s next and that too with Shah Rukh with whom Katrina really hit off during Jab Tak Hai Jaan, would have been fab. She wanted to do Happy New Year but as Kat is committed to finish Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Dhoom 3and Siddharth Anand’s Bang Bang before working for Kapoor’s and Khan’s films, she could not do it.”

Interestingly, Farah’s heroine has to be a fast-talking Marathi girl and also a fabulous dancer since it’s the role of a bar dancer. “Katrina would have needed a long period of intense speech practice to sound like a Marathi. But where was the time?” asks a friend of the actress. So KK’s loss was Dips’ gain.

Imran Got hurt !

Mumbai, July 23 -- Director Milan Luthria is mighty impressed with Imran Khan. So much so that the filmmaker has gone ahead and paid young Imran one heck of a compliment - by likening his commitment towards work with that of his uncle Aamir Khan.

Here's what exactly earned Imran the words of praise from Luthria. While shooting a fight sequence for their upcoming release, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara (OUATIMD), it seems Imran had hurt himself (a bad neck injury). But, instead of calling for a time out, he continued to shoot.

Milan says, "We were shooting a scene where he (Imran) had to fall and tumble three-four times on the pavement and roads. No matter how you do it, it's going to hurt. It was only two-three days after shooting the scene that Sonakshi (Sinha) mentioned that Imran seems to be in a lot of pain. That's when I realised that he was trying his best to hide it." Imran was in pain for a week, and he was shooting two films simultaneously - OUATIMD at night, and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein during the day.

"All through the film, he has given his best. Even when there are changes in schedule, he stays committed," says Milan, adding, that he learnt two things about Imran. "He never said 'no'. Even if he was busy, he always came within an hour, whether it was for a reading or a look test. That encourages a director a lot. Also, he's been able to do tough action scenes without any complaints about pain."

Ranbir dons his father's avatar!

Mumbai, July 24 -- After rendering his father's iconic song, 'Bachna ae haseeno' successfully, Ranbir Kapoor will step into Rishi Kapoor's shoes yet again.

While Ranbir will share screen space with his parents Rishi and Neetu Kapoor for the first time in director Abhinav Singh Kashyap's Besharam, he will also give viewers a glimpse of his father's yesteryear avatar. Ranbir will don Rishi's look from the popular song, 'Om shanti om' from the film Karz (1980).

"He will remind viewers of Rishi's song 'Om shanti om' in one of the songs from his next. He will sport a metallic outfit that is similar to the one worn by Rishi in the number," says an industry insider. The source, however, clarifies that the choice of the attire for the Remo D'Souza choreographed number was impromptu.

"When it was composed and choreographed, the makers thought that a metallic dress would go best with it and they remembered that Rishi had sported something similar in the Karz song," says the source.

When contacted, Abhinav confirms the news, saying, "The resemblance in both outfits is uncanny. However, we had not planned this. When we realised the commonality, we laughed about it."

Ranbir will play a thief in Besharam, while his parents, Rishi and Neetu, will be seen as cops. The film is slated to release on October 2.

I want to surprise people: Arjun Rampal

Mumbai: Arjun Rampal is no longer referred as a non-actor, thanks to well-acclaimed films like 'Rock On', 'Rajneeti' and 'Chakravyuh' which brought his talent and versatility to the fore.
The actor believes he has finally found his space in the industry.
"Everybody wants to surprise people.I too want to do that. I think films like 'Rock On', 'Rajneeti', 'Chakravyuh', and ‘Inkaar’ turned out to be good for me. Prakash Jha thinks I am the most versatile actor in the industry. I think I can never say no to him even if he has two-three lines for me to say in his film. And: so is the case with Abhishek Kapoor," Arjun told US in an interview.
From walking the ramp as a model to winning a national award as an actor, Arjun has come a long way since his debut with 'Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat' in 2001. In between were a string of flops like 'Dil Ka Rishta', 'Asambhav', 'Yakeen' and 'Ajnabee' among others.
His breakthrough came with the remake version of 'Don'. Thereafter he was part of successful films like 'Rock On' which fetched him the national award. Then he teamed up with filmmaker Prakash Jha for films like 'Rajneeti', 'Chakravyuh' and upcoming 'Satyagraha'.
His latest release 'D Day' has been received positively.
"I think I have made a space for myself in the industry. I think that recognition has come... Otherwise I wouldn't be getting to play interesting parts. There is a belief that people have in me today. I want to create a market for myself, which will engage and entertain people; they will not be dry and boring," the 40-year-old actor said.
Arjun feels the time he entered the industry was the right one, as he learnt a lot during his ups and downs.
"It takes time when you are an outsider and don't know industry, don't know what works and are relying on other people's opinion. But then you make up your own mind as what you want to do. I started discovering that after films like 'Om Shanti Om', 'Rock On' and 'Rajneeti' etc."

Salman, Shah Rukh have created a positive environment: Mahesh Bhatt

Mumbai: Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan's reported patch-up at an Iftaar party has impressed Mahesh Bhatt, who says it was bound to happen.

"In the pious month of Ramzan, in which people forget their mutual differences and talk about peace and harmony, it was inevitable that at an Iftaar party people would meet and won't hug each other."

Salman and Shah Rukh were not on talking terms post a fight at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash in 2008.

Bhatt even congratulated the two.

"I congratulate both of them. They have created a very positive environment in the country," said the filmmaker who directed SRK in 'Duplicate'.

Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha heat it up

Here’s the exclusive picture of the much talked-about Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha club number, Party All Night, from Boss. Those who have heard the song swear that it will be one of the year’s hottest club numbers. The song was shot for two days over the weekend. Half of the song is still to be shot.

It presently also features Yo Yo Honey Singh who flew down from Delhi to be a part of it. Along with him, Shiv Pandit and Aditi Rao Hydari also set the screen ablaze in this peppy chartbuster.

However, the highlights of the song are the Akshay-Sonakshi dance moves. Sonakshi has never done a club song before, or dressed in an LBD. While the actress will be seen in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Dobaara with Akshay, she has just a cameo in this film.

The sizzling chemistry between the two in the song has to be seen to be believed.

Both Akshay and Sonakshi were so excited about the song that they both shot for 12 hours at a stretch for it, something that they have never done before.

The song has been directed by Sumit Dutt of Dhinkachika andCharacter Dheela fame. Even he was blown by the energy of this couple. “Akshay and Sonakshi will shock the audience. This will be hard to beat,” he says.

News is that the second portion of the song will be shot in Thailand next month. Along with Sonakshi, Prabhudheva and a couple of other big names are expected to be a part of it. We just hope they are able to match up to Sonakshi’s sizzling act.

EXCLUSIVE! Aamir Khan Wants To Work With Me: Anand Gandhi

A man of many hats – that’s what one could call Anand Gandhi. His film ‘Ship Of Theseus’ is being called the best Indian film in a long while. If you had two words to describe him, one would use ‘articulate’ and ‘knowledgeable’. He speaks a lot, but also knows what he is speaking about.

One would wonder, then, how Anand Gandhi wrote for TV soaps like ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, and how he travelled from writing one of the biggest TV soaps of all time to an intellectual Indian indie film. As his film gets a theatrical release this Friday, 19 July, thanks to a little help from Kiran Rao, Anand Gandhi sat down with BusinessOfCinema to talk about himself, his film, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan.
BOC: How was Anand Gandhi as a child? What did he read, what films did he watch?
Anand: My grandmom was a spiritual shopper. She would spend a lot of her days going to satsangs and meeting gurus of all kinds. My mum was a Bollywood fanatic. She loves romantic, sentimental poetry. She used to read Barkat Virani – the Ghalib of Gujarati poetry. My mum exposed me to poetry, to cinema, to lots of theater, she used to take me to all these plays, and I would come out of them and say “this is an amazing experience”.
I also saw a lot of cinema, largely Bollywood. Hollywood for us at that time – I’m a child of the eighties – meant Jackie Chan, dubbed Jackie Chan, actually, and ‘Honey, I Shrunk The Kids’. So that was the only exposure I had, but the consumption was very high. Also, I wanted to pursue magic very seriously. I spent a lot of time reading magic books and creating my own devices. I always imagined that I would grow up to become a theoretical physicist someday.
I think there were a lot of disadvantages that became advantages at some point in time. For instance, a complete disinterest and a lack of aptitude in sport, lack of a muscular body. I was really fat. Absolutely no enthusiasm allowed me to do a lot of things that were fascinating and on the other hand were compensatory – Compensating for the inability to be able to relate to children in the chawl I was growing up in.
BOC: So you’ve always had this ‘explorer’ streak within you. When did storytelling enter the scene?
Anand: It was a part of it. Only later in life was I able to see the continuum between all of them. Because especially when you’re growing up in India, you are always told “You can only do this.” The rest all is hobby. I was attracted to everything at the same time. I could not choose one over the other. I did not see why I had to choose one over the other. And that’s the reason I dropped out of college also. I’m incredibly interested in scientific inquiry, I’m interested in the inferences of physics, of microbiology, and neurosciences. But ‘satyam’ by itself is of no use, ‘shivam’ and‘sunderam’ is also necessary. I need to use the satyam – the fact – produced by scientific inquiry and juxtapose it with the environment, with myself, with everything around and put a meaningful structure to it so that it can reach a really wide audience because that’s how inquiry has reached me.
BOC: Which film would you consider a landmark for yourself?
Anand: One film that was for me hugely entertaining, that was a big boost in my wanting to make films after that was ‘The Matrix’. I was 17 years old when I saw the film. I was just blown away by it. All the ideas that I’ve ever thought about, all the ideas that I’ve ever been attracted to, the idea of simulation, the idea of illusion, the idea of examining reality, social constructs, religious constructs, evolution of religion. All these ideas are in there with so much entertainment, so much accessibility.
BOC: Coming to ‘Ship Of Theseus’, why the three organs: the eyes, the liver and the kidney? Were there more while scripting?
Anand: There were other organs as well. The initial idea was to make a story about 8 people. Then when I wrote the script, I wrote it about four people. There was also a heart. And by the time I started shooting, I started realising, “This is going to be a very long film with three stories itself.” At the end, you can watch a film at a stretch for two and a half hours max.
BOC: How was it after the World Premiere at Toronto where it got unanimous acclaim? What were your expectations, and did you get that?
Anand: See, the problem with an optimist is that you’re not pleasantly surprised. I’m an optimist. One of my closest friends is a cynic. He says, “Toronto mein itne logon ne bol diya life-changing film hai, usse vada-pav wala thodi tujhko extra chutney dega.” So he’s always happily surprised. What I’d expected at Toronto was that the film will give a very deep experience to the cinephile community. What I’d not expected was that it will give a profound experience to everyone. We were walking the streets of Toronto and people were coming and hugging us, “My life has changed, I’ve never experienced anything like this before.” That was still happily surprising.
BOC: What was the situation of the release of the film before Kiran Rao entered the scene?
Anand: There were no serious talks. We were still doing festival rounds. I would go to multiple producers and their reaction would be “This is amazing. Kya script likha hai! Kya kahaani hai! Wow. Par yeh India mein nahi samajh mein aayega logon ko. The presumptuous arrogance is that ‘Main bahut intelligent hoon, mujhe bahut samajh mein aaya, main keh sakta hoon bahut kamaal hai. But Indian audience nahi samajh paayegi. Indian audience bechaare log hai.” That’s a presumption about 1/5th of human population.
BOC: How do you think Kiran Rao is going to help you get more of an audience?
Anand: See, Kiran is an amazing woman. She’s so driven and passionate about the cinema she loves. She loved the film. We started talking and I suggested about the possibility of her presenting the film. She’s made ‘Dhobi Ghat’, she’s produced ‘Peepli [Live]‘. She knows how to use the infrastructure to expand into the audience, who yet don’t know that they want to see this film. Kiran has brought in a huge amount of force that is becoming the vehicle of the film.
BOC: What are your forthcoming ventures?
Anand: ‘Thumbad’ is in post-production. I have produced it, Sohum Shah has acted in it. Rahi Barve directed it.
BOC: Anything that you are writing for yourself to direct?
Anand: I’m writing a lot of things. There’s one film from that that we’re doing very soon. Again, with Sohum in it. But I’ll have to work more on it to make it presentable.
BOC: Since you are now familiar with him, if you have a script for Aamir Khan, would you approach him?
Anand: Yes. In fact, Aamir has shown a lot of enthusiasm, he loved ‘Ship Of Theseus’, he said that if you have anything that I could do, he would love to do it. I wouldn’t mind that either. The thing is the commitment actors in my films make is of a very severe level. The opportunity, costs become greater. When Sohum Shah was doing ‘Ship Of Theseus’, he put on weight, he became paunchy, he looks very different. Neeraj Kabi lost 17 kgs. The commitment was 4 months before the shoot, he started getting rigourously involved with the philosophy of the film. He went from being a non-vegetarian to a vegetarian. I’m certain that if Aamir is convinced about the film, he would be willing to give in to that kind of a commitment. So that’s a relationship I’m completely open to.
BOC: Did you ever fear, at the time of ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ and ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki’, that you would be stuck, and no one would ever be able to hear your voice?
Anand: I was very young at that time to have any serious insecurity. So while writing ‘Kyunki…’ and ‘Kahaani…’ was a great experience, it was actually putting me in a space where I was writing constantly something that was meant for mass consumption, while I was also writing plays that was meant for consumption of a small group of people. So it was a great place to be in to be able to experience both the distinct types.
BOC: So you were certain that somewhere down the line, you would be able to get people to listen to you.
Anand: I was very certain about it. I feel you need a certain amount of naivety to be so certain. You need to be a little innocent to be so certain. It’s like “arre yaar, apne se nahi hoga toh kisse hoga?” certainty and that’s a good driving force.

Farhan Akhtar starrer Bhaag Milkha Bhaag makes Rs 32.08 crores in the opening weekend

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's biopoic of athlete Milkha Singh becomes the third biggest weekend opener of 2013

The Rakeysh Mehra directed biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaaghas won brownie points from critics and masses alike. And this was bound to happen, considering the good publicity and right buzz before the film’s release. The film was highly anticipated simply for Farhan Akhtar and people were curious to see the effort behind his decision to step into the legendary shoes of India’s famous athlete Milkha Singh! As far as the movie’s impressive collections go, we must say the actor didn’t disappoint the sports star.

The Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures production grossed Rs 32.08 crores nett approximately in its first weekend. The film managed to earn Rs 1.30 crores from paid previews on Thursday and Rs 8.50 crores on Friday. The sports saga witnessed a big jump on Saturday and made Rs 10.50 crores; it got even stronger on Sunday, with Rs 10.25 crores.

“Having tasted success in multistarrers like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Rock On and failure with his only solo starrer Karthik Calling Karthik, Farhan has bounced back…and how!” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi excitedly. “The audience across cities with drastically diverse demographics is loving the film and the numbers have grown steadily by the day through the weekend. Despite the length being a bit of an issue, with a take off like that and the good word of mouth, the film should go past the finish line as quickly as the flying Sikh (Milkha Singh) did in his days on the track!”

The Delhi/Punjab area has had a fantastic weekend due to the film’s local flavour. Going by the positive word of mouth, the three-hour-plus-long biopic is headed for major success. The trade expects BMB to do a lifetime business of Rs 80-90 crores. Considering the exact numbers are still being compiled, Farhan Akhtar’s solo release ranks third after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Rs 61.87 crore) and Race 2 (Rs 48.17 crores).

IIFA 2013: Barfi bags best film, Ranbir best actor, Vidya best actress

Macau: 'Barfi' scooped top honours at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, at a ceremony in the Chinese gambling haven of Macau on Saturday that also celebrated a century of Bollywood.

'Barfi', a romantic comedy about a mute and deaf man and his relationship with two women. The movie was praised by critics for its positive portrayal of physically disabled people, a somewhat unusual theme for Bollywood screenplays.

India, the world's biggest film producer, makes more than double the number of Hollywood movies on an annual basis. Already popular in countries with sizable Indian populations, Indian films are also a growing hit with Chinese audiences as well as in Russia and Germany.

'Barfi' scooped top honours at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, at a ceremony in Macau.

Hosted by Bollywood heartthrobs Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor, the four-hour ceremony of pulsating dance routines and colourful costume changes was attended by an audience of over seven thousand screaming fans.

Some of Indian cinema's biggest names including Deepika Padukone set the Macau arena alight with high octane performances, while actors like Boman Irani and modern pin ups such as Vidya Balan graced the green carpet.

"We make musicals. I think every film is a musical. Every film has at least six to seven songs," said Ayushmann Khurrana, nominated for best actor after his debut in 'Vicky Donor', a romantic comedy about sperm donation. "So that is how Bollywood is completely different from Hollywood."

Best actress was won by Vidya Balan for 'Kahani' while, Ranbir Kapoor for 'Barfi' took home the award for best actor. 'Barfi' also won the award for best film.

India's film entertainment sector is booming and estimated to generate revenue of close to $5 billion by 2015.

The choice of Macau to host the annual event comes as the gambling hub is pushing to diversify its customer base beyond the traditional casino punter who spends only on the baccarat tables rather than on entertainment, dining and hospitality.

Indian customers are increasingly targeted by the casino operators due to their tendency to stay longer than the average Chinese punter and their heavy spending on non-gaming pastimes.
