Madras Cafe: My character lives in constant fear, says Rashi Khanna

New Delhi: Dancing around trees is common for actresses, but battling mosquitoes and power cuts is not. Newcomer Raashi Khanna, who is making her debut with director Shoojit Sircar's forthcoming spy thriller 'Madras Cafe', went through all these tough experiences.

The Delhi girl was not part of the Sri Lankan leg of the film's shoot, but she admits that her stay in Kerala for the movie was wonderful until, of course, when mosquitoes interrupted.

"There were no (Sri Lankan) jungles for me. I shot in Kerala where I enjoyed the food and Shirodhara spa massage. Only mosquitoes bothered me! We were all using mosquito repellants," Raashi told IANS.

Rashi says that her stay in Kerala for the movie was wonderful until the mosquitoes interrupted the shooting.

Erratic electricity supply was another botheration.

"There was electricity issue. Once I got up around 4 a.m. and I saw Shoojit on a scooter, looking out for an electrician. That was funny," said the 22-year-old, who plays the wife of an army officer, essayed by John Abraham in the movie.

"Like any other army officer's wife, Ruby (her character) lives in constant fear and is lonely," she said.

'Madras Cafe' releases Aug 23.

The model-turned-actress was initially unsure about playing the role.

"I was happy to be cast opposite John, but I was also nervous. I wasn't sure about the role, but Shoojit believed in me," said Raashi.

She says the movie's cast and crew helped her feel comfortable on the set.

"I was nervous and excited on the first day. John and Shoojit never made me feel like a newcomer. I had earlier done workshops with Shoojit and he didn't shout at me while shooting, so that made me feel comfortable," said Raashi, a graduate from the capital's Lady Shri Ram College for Women.

John, she says, is "down to earth", and added: "He helped me with my lines also."

Raashi has already signed another film under John's production house - John Abraham Entertainment Pvt Ltd. While she didn't share the details of the new film, she readily revealed how John gave her fitness tips.

"John advised me to eat after every two hours to maintain energy level. He also told me the importance of gymming and eating right," she said.

Raashi had earlier shot for a Tata Sky advertisement, which got her noticed. She went for the audition of 'Madras Cafe' and bagged the role.

Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express getting mixed reviews

The early talk of Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Chennai Express suggest that the film's content has typical southern flavour. Reports say that the on an agreeable note but loses its grip in the second half. The comedy seems to be a forced insertion at various points with movie references of several films. The Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari and Lungi Dance have ignited fun while Titli and Tera Rasta Chhodoon Na did the trick.

The facets of this SRK will be seen in the film while it's the angry SRK towards the end who'll move your hearts. Critics say that Deepika Padukone deserves a special mention for her accent. She is consistently funny and makes up for many laughs.

Chennai Express movie review

Cast:Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone Director: Rohit Shetty

SPOILERS AHEAD

It’s a somewhat long ride that occasionally teeters on the edge of tedium, but it certainly isn’t all wrong. Parts of Chennai Express, propelled by a spirit of inspired lunacy that holds the no-holds-barred action comedy in good stead, is markedly better than the sum total of the film.

If only it had enough steam to sustain its momentum all the way to the very end, it would probably have been far more fun to watch.

But do hop aboard. This Express is designed for quite a crazy carousel. If you hang in there and do not allow the many distractions and diversions along the way throw you off track, you might actually find yourself getting into the swing of things, especially in the first half.

Some of the stops en route might seem rather unnecessary and overstretched. In fact, not all the platforms that Chennai Express chugs into are uniformly inviting.

But the thunderous rhythm of the voyage does generate some genuinely funny gags.

Chennai Express warms up pretty quickly and delivers exactly what you would expect from a Rohit Shetty film: runaway entertainment.

Shetty, who obviously does not have any patience for half measures, goes full tilt at the resources at his disposal and rustles up an action-packed culture-clash comedy that has crowd-pleaser emblazoned all over it.

The director throws dollops of good-natured drollery into the thrills-and-spills blender and comes up with a movie that has all the tried-and-tested ingredients of the genre that he has made his own.

Does Chennai Express get to its destination without too many splutters? Well, although the film runs somewhat low on velocity at times and tends to meander a touch in the second half, fans of Shetty’s brand of filmmaking will have no reason to feel shortchanged.

What is most unusual about Chennai Express is that at least half its spoken lines are delivered in Tamil. Yet comprehension is never a problem, thanks to a screenplay that tides over the need to explain every dialogue in chaste Hindi.

Barring the lead pair and a Tamil-speaking Sikh policeman (played by Mukesh Tiwari), the principal characters in the film communicate their thoughts in their mother tongue, with the heroine serving as an ‘interpreter’ wherever the need arises, earning the sobriquet of Ms Subtitle from the wise-cracking male protagonist.

The storyline is no great shakes but the delivery is always rambunctiously lively. Shah Rukh Khan is a sweetmeat trader’s beloved grandson. The grandpa dies just shy of turning 100.
Rahul’s granny (Kamini Kaushal) requests the 40-year-old to fulfill the dead man’s last wish to have his ashes immersed in the sea off Rameswaram. Rahul takes the urn ostensibly on a trip to the South but connives with a couple of friends to head to Goa instead. Fate intervenes and his feigned trip on Chennai Express lasts much longer than he had bargained for.

He bumps into Meena, who is being escorted back home by four beefy cousins after a failed attempt to flee her village. Rahul is caught in the game that the girl decides to play with her dad, Durgeshwara (Sathyaraj), in order to avoid marrying a hulky muscleman, Thangaballi (Nikitin Dheer).

Chennai Express promises a superstar in all his many-splendoured glory. And it delivers Shah Rukh Khan in a guise that is 75 per cent lover boy-prankster Rahul (that is what his character is predictably called) and the remaining 25 per cent a fearless ‘common man’ who musters the strength of a hundred able-bodied men when he is pushed to a corner.

Chennai Express also gives Deepika Padukone a vantage seat in the best coach and she makes the most of the opportunity. As a southern mafia don’s feisty daughter, Meena, she lays it on really thick, both in terms of accent and body language.

Deepika’s diction and lingo appears a tad too labored at times, but, to her credit, she gets it right consistently.

The whole-hearted zeal that Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika bring to the table and the steady flow of funny one-liners serve Shetty’s purpose well, turning Chennai Express into an elopement-against-all-odds rigmarole that hits the right buttons at most turns.

Amid the flying bodies and cars that the director has a penchant for, the actors make their way through the rubble largely unscathed.

That, of course, does not mean that Chennai Express does not hit its share of rough patches. It does, but thanks to the free-wheeling energy that courses through its body, the smooth passages make up for the ones that are riddled with jerks.

Chennai Express is a full-on masala film that is completely unapologetic about its intentions. And that is its USP.

How Hrithik Roshan got fit for Krrish 3 and for life!

We’ve seen him dance, act, sing in his movies but one thing that remains constant are his good looks, charming personality and definitely his fit physique. But Hrithik too had his low point after a back injury which left him bedridden for months. Now, he is back in the game with an even better looking body (drool!) especially created for his upcoming film Krrish 3. We give you his diet and fitness secrets – all you need to know – in this article.

How it all started

After his back injury, Hrithik was on bed rest for months and gave into his cravings for muffins, cookies and cigarettes quite often. ‘I was smoking three packs a day. I had been smoking for the last two-and-a-half years now; everything was just going the wrong way. I knew that if I didn’t put a stop to it now, it was going to take over my life. That was going to be my downfall.’ After realising that he could not play a superhero with a waist of 91 cm, Hrithik decided to hire Kris Gethin as his fitness trainer. He wanted to inculcate fitness in his lifestyle and not just get in shape for a particular role. He chose not to opt for crash diets either. ‘I’d done that before in my life. I’d gotten into the best shape. [Then] I’d go back to all the wrong ways, eating chocolates and letting myself go. I knew that this wasn’t just getting into shape for a character. This was something I wanted; it had to be a lifestyle change. It had to be something that would last me all my life.’

And thus began his training with Kris’s 12-week Body by Design plan. The results were immediate and dramatic. ‘I look at myself and I am amazed that something like this is possible. It was a twelve-week transformation, but we completed it in ten weeks. ‘I’m just amazed at the possibilities of the human body and how easy it was. There was no sacrifice. Everything just flowed. I was loving my meals. They were nutritious as well as tasty. I don’t think I can go back to ‘normal’ (if I can say ‘normal’) kinds of food again, where it’s just about taste and not about nutrition.’

How Hrithik trained

Hrithik followed the Body by Design plan which consists of three phases. The fundamental phase starts with basics of strength training to prepare your body for the intense training in the coming weeks. It involves isolation, compound and multimuscle movements to work the muscle to its full capacity and separate development from one muscle to the next, which helps create a toned appearance.

The second or the momentum phase focuses on strength and muscle development to add density to the muscle because the denser the muscle, the more calories are required and burned to maintain it—this is when your body starts to turn into a calorie-burning machine.

The last phase or DTP (Dramatic Transformation Principle) is highly intense and really pushes your limits a notch higher. It is an advanced level – though the exercises are simple, they place a distinct stress on your muscles that will push them to produce previously unimaginable results. And Hrithik is certainly a living proof of this workout plan.

Due to his knee injury and slipped disc, Hrithik did a lot of CrossFit and functional training along with the DTP plan. After 10 gruelling weeks of hard work and dedication, his body was transformed to what it looks today.

What Hrithik ate

Any fitness regimen is incomplete if one does not eat the right food at the right time and Hrithik made pretty sure he did not make this mistake of not eating right. He hired Marika Johansson as his diet consultant. The very first change he had to make was to have frequent smaller meals rather than three large meals. In order to make sure he ate nutritious food, she came up with unique recipes like protein muffins and healthy meatballs which Hrithik gorged on while filming Krrish 3.

He ate 7-8 meals in a day, each of which consisted of very simple food in the right ratio. His meals had good protein sources (chicken, beef, egg whites, fish and protein shakes) and good carb sources (brown rice, sweet potatoes, oats, whole wheat pasta). He also consumed healthy fats such as omega oils and nuts.

All in all, Hrithik did put in a lot of efforts to get into this shape and the results are wonderful. Now that you know his fitness secrets, you too can follow this path of getting healthy and fit the right way.

"He will be flying to London," sources close to the actor told PTI.

47-year-old Salman Khan was denied the visa because some papers related to the poaching case against him did not reach on time to fulfill visa requirements, his father Salim Khan had said.

Aishwarya Rai to make a comeback with an item song?

It seems Aishwarya Rai will mince her way back to films not with a full-fledged role but with an item number.

The 39-year-old beauty, who took a maternity break from films in 2011 and has since pitched herself headlong into motherhood, is contemplating a comeback now that the sweet Aaradhya Bachchan is going to be two come November. She has admitted to getting offers from various filmmakers, but it looks like Sanjay Leela Bhansali will steal a march over everyone else.

Buzz is that Bhansali wants Aishwarya Rai to do a special item number for his film Ram Leela, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in leading roles.

Earlier, the filmmaker had reportedly tossed the offer to Madhuri Dixit, but things didn’t materialize. This time he’s said to have approached his all-time favourite Ash whom he has directed in three films: Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Guzaarish.

It’s learnt that Ash hasn’t turned down the offer, so she may be considering it seriously. So far, she has done just one item song, 'Kajra Re', which is an all-time hit.

When contacted, Sanjay Leela Bhansali denied approaching Ash for the item in Ram Leela, but insiders insist that he wants to keep it hush-hush until things are finalized.

If Aishwarya Rai indeed gives her nod, it would mark her return to the big screen after three years.

Review B.A. Pass: We want to see underneath, and what we get is neon glaze

Movie Review: B.A.Pass
Cast: Shadab Kamal, Shilpa Shukla, Rajesh Sharma, Dibyendu Bhattacharya

Director: Ajay Bahl

The Indian Express rating: **

There is so little attention paid, in a thought-through manner, to the questions arising from marital emptiness and genteel, soul-sucking poverty, and urban decay that when a film like B.A. Pass comes along, you are willing it to be about all of this and more. Ajay Bahl's directorial debut lays out a plot with promise, but then belies it, by not giving us as much as it could, and should have.

Mohan (Kamal) is an orphan with no prospects, but burdened with expectations. He has to leave his small-town home and move into his aunt's house in Delhi, where he is thrust into a world he has no tools to negotiate: stuck in a no-hope college course (B.A. Pass, for those who know Delhi University, is mostly for those who have no particular academic skills or interest and who did not have the marks to get into an honours course), and relatives who offer him no nourishment, Mohan finds himself entangled in a seductress's web.

The creation of Sarika (Shukla) should have been a triumph for Bollywood. Very rarely is a woman with strong sexual needs placed at the centre of a mainstream film, and Sarika is unapologetic about being a cougar: she grabs, and she gets. Shilpa Shukla, whom we saw first as a feisty hockey player in Chak De, brings to the part a frozen graspingness. Whether she is laboring on top of her young lover, or having him pleasure her, or standing up to her boorish husband (Sharma), she doesn't change expression. Why is there so little going on with her? In this juicy lollipop of a role, which should have allowed an actor to explore many shades, Shukla is singularly uni-tone.

Big B took quiz shows into dining rooms: Derek O'Brien

Veteran quiz master and Parliamentarian Derek O'Brien feels that megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has been hosting 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' in the past and is set to host the latest season, took quiz shows into "dining rooms".

"Mr Bachchan is an iconic figure and a brilliant quiz show host. He has helped in a great way in taking quizzing into the dining rooms and making quizzing a game show for the whole family," said O'Brien.

He also thinks that the art has changed a lot on the small screen over the years.

"In the early days quizzing was the hobby of intellectuals. Today, quizzing is more about self-improvement. Today, it is not just about absorbing information, but about imbibing the knowledge and realising how to apply it," he said.

O'Brien is now back with a new season of Bournvita Quiz Contest (BQC) as a host.

"I wouldn't call it a comeback as such; BQC has always been around. We were on air on Colors channel in 2011 and 2012 as well," he said.

BQC started out as a live quiz show in 1972, then as a radio show in 1973 before it debuted on the television. It is completing its 40 years.

"Even after 21 years, every question is vetted through me. I am still very hands on," O'Brien said.

But otherwise, he does not follow TV much. "I mostly follow news channels and, of course, sports when India is playing. I am a great Rajesh Khanna fan. So whenever there is an old film of him playing on any channel, I try my best to watch," he said.

Katrina Kaif upset and distressed over leaked pics

Katrina Kaif recently made headlines when a leading magazine published her bikini pictures. The actress was snapped holidaying in Spain with her rumoured boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor.

The duo, who have never openly declared their relationship, seemed to be enjoying a sunny day at the beach on their Spanish holiday.

However, Katrina Kaif was not pleased at all with this "invasion of privacy" as she puts it.

Katrina, who has just returned from Sri Lanka after spending quality time with Ranbir, has sent an open letter to the media with an appeal that all media running the pictures of her Spanishescapades refrain from doing so.

"I am writing this to say that I feel most upset, distressed and invaded at my pictures published in a film magazine (and which were carried by other media). The pictures were taken while I was on holiday by someone who, in an act of cowardice, has shot without permission and then used the pictures for commercial gain," she wrote in her letter.

"There is a breed of journalism that preys on celebrities in the worst possible manner crossing all lines of privacy and decency. Running these pictures shows support for this school of journalism."

"I request that all media running these pictures please refrain from doing so. I have a wonderful relationship with the media and have been accessible to the media at all times. There is no reason for this furtive and invasive behaviour," her letter further read.

On asked about how Stardust managed to get the private moments on camera, Ram reveals the pictures were clicked in Spain by an international photographer.

Katrina and Ranbir were spending sometime on the beach, indulging in some water sports.

"I won't date anyone from the industry, honestly. Industry guys are amazing, but the good ones are taken," Sonam said here.

"I have learnt that work and pleasure should be separate," added the actress, who was present at the cover launch of Stardust magazine, featuring her and her 'I Hate Luv Storys' co-star Imran Khan.

Sonam Kapoor has been romantically linked with 'I Hate Luv Storys' director Punit Malhotra in the past.

Sonam was all praises for Imran, who, according to her, is "the best looking guy in the industry".

Recalling an incident when she felt overshadowed by the actor's good looks and glow, Sonam said: "We were shooting for 'I Hate Luv Storys', and I kept on telling him, 'If you (Imran) will look more beautiful than me, then I will really get upset with you'."

"I was really upset at that time as his skin was really glowing and I was like, 'Oh my god! I will look awkward now next to him (in the film)'," she added.

Off the screen one doesn't know, Sonam's on-screen love life has been quite exciting, courtesy movies like 'Saawariya' and the recently released 'Raanjhanaa'.

Meanwhile, the actress will soon be seen in the remake of 1980 hit movie 'Khoobsoorat'.

Shatrughan Sinha inviting action: Bihar BJP

Taking pot shot at the BJP, the congress said there were several other leaders within the BJP who are opposed to Narendra Modi.

PATNA: Upset over Shatrughan Sinha's remark describing Bihar chief minister as a prime ministerial material, the BJP on July 31 said the actor-politician was inviting action from the party.

"It is for the central leadership to take action against Sinha who continues to embarrass the party with his utterances. We will also speak to the party leadership in New Delhi," BJP vice-president CP Thakur told reporters here on July 31 .

"It is not for the first time the MP has gone overboard in breaching the party discipline. If he thinks of quitting, the party will not come in his way," Thakur said.

Apart from suspending the party MLA Amarnath Gami, the BJP on Tuesday removed former MLC Ramkishore Singh from the post of party spokesperson for having spoken in favour of Bihar chief minister.

Singh on July 31 however decided to quit the party saying he supported the ideology of inclusive politics of Nitish Kumar .

Taking pot shot at the BJP, the congress said there were several other leaders within the BJP who are opposed to Narendra Modi. "The BJP itself is a divided house over the name of Modi. And to think that the people of this country will accept Modi is hard to digest " the Bihar congress media in-charge Prem Chand Mishra said
